Nigeria cannot survive another Biafra –Onwudiwe
http://www.sunnewsonline.com May 31, 2017 10:38 AM

Prof. Ebere Onwudiwe, an economist and a political scientist was part of those that put together the conference on “Memory & Nation Building, Biafra: 50 Years After”, recently held at the Yar’Adua Center in Abuja , under the sponsorship of Ford Foundation, Open Society Initiative for West Africa (Osiwa) and the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Foundation.

He noted that the failure of the 3 Rs (Rehabilitation, Reconstruction and Reconciliation, a government policy after the civil war), was responsible for the emergence of Independent People of Biafra (IPOB) and Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) .

What’s the whole idea of the conference, Biafra at 50?

Biafra is a historical fact. Mentioning the word Biafra or even discussing it as we did at the conference should not be done under the table. The history of the civil war is part of the history of Nigeria. Therefore, we saw a need for a national conversation on the country’s most weighty calamity since self-rule. To keep avoiding a national discussion of Biafra is not very smart because it amounts to sweeping a significant portion of national history under the rug.

A society that studiously pretends that a huge and catastrophic part of its history did not happen in a mindless effort to hide it from its younger generations is investing on the repeat of that history. I believe strongly that Nigeria cannot survive another Biafra. This informed the third reason for our conference that is encapsulated in the question: Why are people still agitating for Biafra?

So tell us why people are still agitating for Biafra?

In a sense, this is a primary focus of the conference. You will notice that the most important panel of the conference was focused on the famous Three Rs of the Gowon administration at the end of the war. That panel is aptly entitled: ‘Reconciliation, Reconstruction, and Rehabilitation: What Have We Learned?’

You see, the failure of Nigeria to vigorously and successfully implement the Three Rs policy is in partly responsible for the MASSOB and IPOB uprisings of today. A smart country should be having a real epiphany right about now with what’s contemporaneously happening in the North -east because if you fail also to keep the promises of rebuilding that region after the devastation of Boko Haram, if you let the hopes invested in the promise of that rebuilding die like the Three Rs, you can also be sure that the children in IDPs today will grow up and ask questions. Their disagreements then with the state will be by a feeling of deprivation as IPOB feels today.

Is it safe to say then that the Federal Government has failed the Biafrans?

Haba, I don’t know what is safe to say; you have to go to the DSS for that. (Laughs). But let me remind you that Nigeria’s original goal of the civil war was to preserve the country. Remember also that the operative equivalent slogan then said that, ‘To keep Nigeria one is a task that must be done.’

The military defeat of secession only achieved that goal in half. The other half is the war of re-integration that can only happen in the battlefields of policy making and actual implementation where the most effective weapons are the soft tools of reason, justice and fairness. Nigeria seems to have lost this part of the war.

But this is not a permanent condition. It is totally reversible. It can win by plugging all the cracks on the wall of national integration for all Nigerians. We cannot win this war by behaving like Ostrich, by hiding our heads in the sand and thinking from the other exposed end that everything is honkey-dory; that the system is fair to everyone and that all those protesting injustice are all IPOBs and noise makers. That’s a great, great mistake. The system must listen to the truly wise among its elites not to the justice-impervious and muscle-flexing buffoons among us.

You had another panel termed “Post-Biafra Generation: Securing Our Future,” what’s that all about?

It is about focusing on the Nigeria of tomorrow by citizens many of whose lives lie in the future. The panelists there are all post-Biafrans. They were neither Nigerians nor Biafrans during the civil war. You know why? They simply did not exist then, period. It is from these ranks, this age bracket that IPOB is born. If they are children of Ndigbo such as my own magnificent offspring, they should not receive the Shylock treatment from Nigeria.

They were not Biafrans, were they? They are Biafrans only by discrimination, by injustice, by unfairness, by thoughtless attribution and subsequent retribution! When you deny them true equality they don’t rationalize it and try to understand it as price for Biafra. No. They take it personally; they join IPOB. I remember a brilliant essay on restructuring Nigeria by the current Emir of Kano some years ago where he gave this same exact warning. Agree with emir or not, he is a wise man. This country ought to listen to its wise men and women rather than harass and gag them.

But some say that your conference is an Abuja elite affair that did not deal with the yearnings and grievances the sufferings in Igbo land?

Let me say first of all that Ndigbo are not the only victims of the Biafran war. People of the present day South-south in Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, Rivers and Akwa Ibom also bore the brunt of that conflict in significant measures. In any case, the conference was not to preach to the choir. We wanted a conference that will address where we go from here as Nigerians. And you will agree with me that the Yar A’dua Center, the organizers of the conference did a great job of it. We are not pretending that it was a cure all conference. This in fact is the second conference on Biafra that I have been part of. The first one was at the University of Ibadan. Gen. Gowon was there. Gen. Effiong was there, plus other significant participants in government such as Chief Richard Akinjide and noted journalist of that era like the late MCK Ajuluchuku, and many academics. Also please note that as we speak, there are many other conferences to mark the 50th year of Biafra in universities around the world with themes emphasizing memory, the atrocities of the war and the like. These are all good. It is, in fact, good enough that we are able to hold the conference on Biafra in Abuja in the first place. I wonder if this could even have happened in previous administrations with a sitting acting President in participation.

So really, this conference was not an Abuja affair. It was a veritable Nigerian event designed to bring to the consciousness of the whole country the need to win the Biafran war in all fronts, and then, move on to a collective great future. A situation where a grandfatherly person like Chief Iwuanyanwu who saw the war up close can be moved 50 years on to recently say, ‘I am a Biafran’ should make this country think. This is why we focused on the three Rs to address a major part of what IPOB and MASSOB are protesting.

What’s Your Say On This?

A German’s View on Islam – worth reading because this is by far the best explanation of the Muslim terrorist situation I have ever read. His references to past history are accurate and clear. The author of this email is Dr. Emanuel Tanya, a well-known and well-respected psychiatrist–a man, whose family was German aristocracy prior t…o World War II, and owned a number of large industries and estates. When asked how many German people were true Nazis, the answer he gave can guide our attitude toward fanaticism.

‘Very few people were true Nazis,’ he said, ‘but many enjoyed the return of German pride, and many more were too busy to care. I was one of those who just thought the Nazis were a bunch of fools. So, the majority just sat back and let it all happen. Then, before we knew it, they owned us, and we had lost control, and the end of our world had come.

My family lost everything. I ended up in a concentration camp and the Allies destroyed my factories.’

We are told again and again by ‘experts’ and ‘talking heads’ that Islam is the religion of peace and that the vast majority of Muslims just want to live in peace. Although this unqualified assertion may be true, it is entirely irrelevant. It is meaningless fluff, meant to make us feel better, and meant to somehow diminish the specter of fanatics rampaging across the globe in the name of Islam.

The fact is that the fanatics rule Islam at this moment in history. It is the fanatics who march. It is the fanatics who wage any one of 50 shooting wars worldwide. It is the fanatics who systematically slaughter Christian or tribal groups throughout Africa and are gradually taking over the entire continent in an Islamic wave. It is the fanatics who bomb, behead, murder, or honor-kill. It is the fanatics who take over mosque after mosque. It is the fanatics who zealously spread the stoning and hanging of rape victims and homosexuals. It is the fanatics who teach their young to kill and to become suicide bombers.

The hard, quantifiable fact is that the peaceful majority, the ‘silent majority,’ is cowed and extraneous. Communist Russia was comprised of Russians who just wanted to live in peace, yet the Russian Communists were responsible for the murder of about 20 million people. The peaceful majority were irrelevant.

China’s huge population was peaceful as well, but Chinese Communists managed to kill a staggering 70 million people.

The average Japanese individual, prior to World War II, was not a warmongering sadist. Yet, Japan murdered and slaughtered its way across South East Asia in an orgy of killing that included the systematic murder of 12 million Chinese civilians, most killed by sword, shovel, and bayonet.

And who can forget Rwanda, which collapsed into butchery. Could it not be said that the majority of Rwandans were ‘peace loving’?

History lessons are often incredibly simple and blunt. Yet for all our powers of reason, we often miss the most basic and uncomplicated of points: peace-loving Muslims have been made irrelevant by their silence. Peace-loving Muslims will become our enemy if they don’t speak up, because like my friend from Germany, they will awaken one day and find that the fanatics own them, and the end of their world will have begun.

Peace-loving Germans, Japanese, Chinese, Russians, Rwandans, Serbs, Afghans, Iraqis, Palestinians, Somalis, Nigerians, Algerians, and many others have died because the peaceful majority did not speak up until it was too late.

Islamic prayers have now been introduced into Toronto and other public schools in Ontario, and, yes, in Ottawa too while the Lord’s Prayer was removed (due to being so offensive?! To whom? Not to the vast majority of Canadians!).

The Islamic way is only peaceful until the fanatics move in.

In Australia, and indeed in many countries around the world, many of the most commonly consumed food items have the halal emblem on them. Just look at the back of some of the most popular chocolate bars, and at other food products in your local supermarket. Foods on aircraft have the halal emblem, just to appease the privileged minority who are now rapidly expanding throughout the world.

In the U.K, the Muslim communities refuse to integrate and there are now dozens of no-go zones within major cities across the country that the police force dare not intrude upon. Sharia law prevails there, because the Muslim community in those areas refuses to acknowledge British law.

As for we who watch it all unfold, we must pay attention to the only group that counts — the fanatics who threaten our way of life.

Anyone who doubts the seriousness of this issue and just deletes without sending it on, is contributing to the passiveness that allows the problems to expand.

So, extend yourself a bit and send this on and on and on in the hope that thousands, world-wide, read this, think about it, and send it on – before it’s too late.

Most people in the world are probably unaware that Ohafia (a local government of Abia State,Nigeria), has one of the best and most colorful cultural heritages.

There could be no better place to be for vacation like in villages like Elu, Ebem, Asaga, Eziafor, Abiriba, Amekpu, etc. These places will leave countless Wows from your mouth.

Among their cultural displays is Iri Aha (WAR DANCE).

This is the most beautiful and significant of them all. And is performed at very important ocassion like, Igba Uche(Traditional Retirement of age groups), Iri Ji (celebration of the New Yam Festival), Coronations, and funeral services of very important personalities in the community.

The above tent, is called Ulue Okara (that is- Wrapper House). This is built with colorful George Wrappers commonly worn at traditional functions by the Ohafians. This tent could also be used during traditional marriage ceremony for the bride.

Indeed, Ohafia is a place to be during festive season and for good home made dishes like Ugba, Ukazu Agwu Agwu, Roasted Yam, Ahu (Melon Burns),etc.

An out going (retiring age group) parading the streets of the community. Its usually a long parade but very fun.

The above picture shows two family(brothers), retiring together from local or community functions. They are been accompanied from their various home by their family member, friends and well wishers to the village square and then to the King’s Palace.

This celebration comes up every two-two or threes three years, depending on each village.

Truly, Ohafia is a place to be. Next Igba Uche will be coming up by December 2018, 2019 and 2020 respectively. Plan to visit this great land.

I promised to bring you wealth of information that can motivate, inspire and encourage you, and your life.

  •    “Every man, woman and child has infinite potentials just waiting to be tapped.”____Dr. Edward L. Kramer .
  • “You must know yourself in order to know your powers, and not until you know them can you use them wisely and full.”___Ralph Waldo Trine
  • “Your mind like an eagle with its mighty wings, is capable of soaring to great heights.”___Sidney N. Bremer, J. D.

Too many people have been content with a mere “animal existence” sort of life. Orison Swett Marden put it this way:

“The trouble with most of us is that, while ambitious to succeed, we do not put ourselves in a condition to win; we do not cut the cords which bind us,or try to get rid of the entanglements and obstructins that hinder us. We trust too much to luck.”

“Men are anxious to improve their circumstances, but are unwilling to improve themselves; they therefore remain bound,” said James Allen in his book, “As A Man Thinketh.”

“No desire is felt for a thing unknown,” says a Latin proverb.

A generatiago the dictionaries described uranium as a rare small white metallic substance with known uses. During the generation past we have seen demonstrated a power from this uranium substance that has changed the course of civilization. Virtually unlimited power had been in this relatively unknown substance all the time but since the power was known, too, it was unused.

People are a lot like this example of uranium. Although capable of tremendous accomplishments, nineteen out of every twenty are content to drift with the tides of life. To them, life is a struggle. They do not know their own capabilities—they have never learned how to succeed. Only a small part of their mental powerhouse is ever tapped. Unknown, priceless potentials remain virtually unused.

Socrates’ guiding rule was “Know thyself.” These words are of eternal significance. No better advice was ever given to man.

“There is no limit to the knowing of the self that knows,” the Hindus have said. There is no limit to the developing of the self which steadily and vigorously wills to unfold.

Believe with Stevens that every man has in himself s continent of undiscovered possibilities. Happy is he who acts the Columbus to his own soul.

As the future oak lies folded in the acorn, so in the present lies our future. Our success will be, can bex but a natural tree, developed from the seeds of our own sowing: the fragrance of its blossoms and the richness of its fruitage will depend upon the nourishment absorbed from our past and present.

In an article entitled, The Energies of Men, published about the turn of the century in the Philosophical Review, Professor William James uses these words: “Most of us feel as if we lived habitually with the sort of cloud weighing upon us, below our highest notch of clearness in discernment, sureness in reasoning and firmness in deciding.”  Further on in the article, he describes how men from time to time, through various experiences, and chiefly by the aid of Suggestion, are enabled to “tap new levels of energy,” and thus disclose in themselves forces of which they had been hitherto ignorant.

Professor James is here describing a common experience. We are all more or less conscious that we are vnot living up to our highest mental capacity; in our daily work we are not expressing our very best ability; when we undertake some enterprise we do not see it through with that measure of power of which we believe ourselves truly capable.

How many times we come to the end of the week, or reach the completion ofbsomebtask with theme regretful feeling, that if we could only retrace our steps and tryvit over again,we should succeed much better. Then, there do come times to everyone of us when we seem to break through this “cloud that rests upon us so habitually,” when we are lifted to higher planes of mental activity, when we can command our mental resources as we do not ordinarily. Then it is that we able to do our work with a facility, an ease, a precision, an effectiveness, that causes us to marvel at our own skill and power. After such and experience we naturally ask the question, “Why have been able to do so easily and successfully what, at another time, I would have done laboriously and most unsatisfactorily? If at some times I am conscious of possessing such powers, why not at all times?” The answer lies in our ignorance of ourselves and the laws of our mental being. We cannot do so habitually, is due to our ignorance of the powers and capacities with which we are all endowed, and which need only to be called forth and developed.

From the book entitled- SUCCESSFUL ACHIEVEMENTS by Sidney N. Bremer, J.D.

          Compiled by: Kelvin Oden

Yesterday, wrote intensively on the Personalities of a True Worshipper. Today, I’m continuing on the same journey, and I’m concentrating on The Heart Of Worshipper.
I remember the time I developed passion for gospel music. The feelings and desires are very different from what I used to know and have. The conviction and peace it brings are superb and only those who are true worshippers will understand what I talking about in this blog post.

   *  The heart and mind of a true worshipper soars beyond the imagination and realm of an ordinary Christian.

   * He sees deeper into the realm of worship into God’s kingdom while worshipping here on earth.

There’s nothing that thrills a true worshipper like worshipping with the right people and also in an atmosphere of worship, because his or her heart is made up of a constant flow of desire  to pour his heart in reverence and exaltation- no matter where he or she finds him or herself.

    * The heart of a true worshipper is like a flowing river that constantly sing out, worship or exalt the Lord Jesus Christ. It never runs dry of praises or worship, rather, he expands and flourishes like the cedars of Lebanon.

   * The heart of a true worshipper does not seek to be paid before it offers his service, neither does it seek to be paid after rendering his service. He was worships God even in tight corners, when his back is up against the wall. When there’s no food on his table, when there’s no money in his bank account. He sees and places God first.

And there’s one amazing thing about a true worshipper; he seeks to worship God more and more and can’t seem to have enough of Him(God). He can forfeit watching a football match just to be found in the presence of his Maker(In this contest, I talking about  ‘singing’), rendering his service.

   * He does not see worshipping God in songs as a protocol that should be scheduled and observed during church activities and settings, rather,he sees it as a part of him that  diminishes each time he fails to do it. It happens to me likewise any other true worshippers.

You may say, “I don’t have a good voice to sing “, but let me quickly give you a news flash-

‘Worshipping is not based on your voice texture, rather, your heart texture.

This is what God want to see each time we worship Him. He does not want to see people who are musically skilled and inclined without a good heart of worship. Or those who make good worship but their hearts are far from him.

“For God is a Spirit and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth”. (John 4:24)

How much time do you feed God? Are you starving Him? Is He pleased with your services?

Remember, this is the major reason for our existence on planet earth. To be in fellowship with our Creator.

Never let a rock cry out in your place.

Copied from my book- MYSTERY,MIND & MOTIVATION.

God loves a true worshipper. The Almighty God, says

             “ I seek a worshipper”.

Yes, God is no respecter of any man, but He respects a True worshipper.

Let’s consider King Hezekiah in the Bible(Isaiah 38), when it was time for him to die and god had pronounced a death sentence over his life and and had sent prophet Isaiah to declare it to King Hezekiah. It was recorded that king Hezekiah turned his face to the Lord and made some speeches that made god change His mind, and the place of death was replaced with 15 more years.

King Hezekiah touched the heart of God. And God would let him go because the grave can’t praise the Lord.

Worship is the feeling or expression of reverence ansmd adoration for a deity ,religious rites and ceremonies.

But in this contest, I’m talking exclusively about the worshippers of our only One and True God- Jehovah!

 *  A true worshipper of God is not that person who attends a particular church denomination, rather, he is that man, woman, boy or girl who understands what God requires of him or her at any point in time.

*  A true worshipper of God is able to detect when God is hungry and thirsty of adorations and thanksgiving via songs etc.

Now, it is very important for us to and understand the difference between a Worshipper and a True Worshipper. A worshipper is more or less a ‘church goer’, who does not or may not have come to the understanding of what worship is all about and who God is.

He or she sees worshipping as a Protocol that is usually observed during church service session. He or she may have a very good vocal but that’s not the case. As a matter of fact,he or she might have been raised in a godly home,so in order to reciprocate, he or she joins the church choir or worship team. But true worshipping is far more than that. It’s a personal relationship that must be built and experienced. It does no grow Spontaneously!

If this person have not accepted Christ Jesus as his Lord and person(which is the most important part of the christian faith), he is obviously fulfilling some church or parental requirements. Truth be told,he or she is just offering Lip-Services.

But a True worshipper does not need an audience before worshipping or praising. He does not seek to entertain the congregation; he’s not compelled before he worships- it flows from his heart which is always connected to God.

A true worshipper does not have a particular time schedule for offering worship to God. He sees worshipping as an essential part of his life that maintained, whose link must not be broken.

Bishop Thomas Dexter Jakes said and I quote:

“If it were possible for God to have    weakness, it would be for worship. He  loves a worshipper. The Almighty! The All-Powerful God said- ‘I seek a               worshipper.”

Now, note here that the worshipper mentioned here is not the type that offers lips-services,rather,the  true one that understands the mind of God.

         Finally, remember that:

God is a ‘Spirit’ and ‘They’ that ‘Worship’ ‘Him’ ‘Must’ Worship ‘Him’ in ‘Spirit’ and in ‘Truth’.” (John 4:24)

Now you see what I’ve been talking about? Underline the words with the apostrophes and if you look up those words, you will see the clear picture of a Worshipper and a True Worshipper.

N/B: this article is extracted from my book that I’m still writing.

This is a quick guide to vocal health.

Do you use your voice to make a living? Occupational voice users are individuals who rely heavily on vocal communication to do their jobs.

Voice problems are characterized by complaints of hoarseness, voice breaks, pains, tension or effort during speech, change in pitch, and vocal weakness. Factors such as extensive voice use combined with noisy speaking environments, poor health, bad posture, inadequate vocal technique and stresses of life that can lead to vocal problems.

Get the best mileage from your voice by practicing good vocal hygiene.

Here are some tips to help you put your best voice forward.

  * Don’t cough or clear your throat habitually. Instead, sip some water, swallowing slowly, yawn to relax your throat, or hum, concentrating on resonance sensations.

  * Don’t yell, cheer or scream habitually.

  * Avoid prolonged talking over long distance and outdoors. Move closer to be heard without yelling, or use a vocal amplification system. Learn good projection techniques.

  * Avoid talking in noisy situationdms, over loud music, office equipment, and noisy classrooms, in cars, buses and airplanes by reducing background noise when you speak. Always gacevthe people you are speaking with and position yourself close to them.

  * Don’t try to address large audiences without proper vocal amplification. You should be able to lecture at a comfortable volume. Always use a high a quality vocal amplification system for public speaking and learn good microphone techniques.

  * Don’t vocalize or sing beyond your comfortable range. Know and respect your vocal limits. Seek professional voice training.

  * Avoid vocally abusive nervous habits during public speaking such as throat clearing, speaking quickly, breath holding, speaking on insufficient breath, speaking with a low-pitched fillers like “umms” and “ahhs”.

  * Don’t expose your voice to excessive pollution and dehydrating agents like chemicals fumes, alcohol, caffeine and dry air. Keep the air and your body clean and humid. Drink 8-10 cups of water daily. Don’t smoke.

Trump vs. Comey: Who will America trust?

Updated 0804 GMT (1604 HKT) May 17, 2017

WASHINGTON, DC - JANUARY 22: U.S. President Donald Trump (C) shakes hands with James Comey, director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), during an Inaugural Law Enforcement Officers and First Responders Reception in the Blue Room of the White House on January 22, 2017 in Washington, DC. Trump today mocked protesters who gathered for large demonstrations across the U.S. and the world on Saturday to signal discontent with his leadership, but later offered a more conciliatory tone, saying he recognized such marches as a "hallmark of our democracy." Story highlights

  • Trump fired Comey last week
  • Sources confirm Comey wrote memos of some of his encounters with proceedings.ngton (CNN)America faces a fateful choice: Does it believe Donald Trump or James Comey?

A theatrical showdown is now looming between the President with a hazy relationship with the truth and the FBI director he fired, whose finely tuned sense of his own integrity has often steered him into rocky political waters.

The epic head-to-head was set up by stunning allegations that in February Trump pressured Comey to shut down the FBI’s Russia probe that was, among other avenues of inquiry, investigating former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Furthermore, in a sensational development, sources told The New York Times and then CNN on Tuesday night that Comey wrote down his account of Trump’s request over the probe in a memo that is about to become one of Washington’s most famed artifacts.

The coming confrontation between Comey and Trump is more than just an opportunity to air grievances that appear to have quickly grown between the two men during their short working relationship and over the FBI director’s humiliating dismissal — news of which he learned on cable television just one week ago.

It promises to have grave implications for the longevity of an administration that appears to slip deeper into utter disarray by the hour. There doesn’t seem to be a way that both men could survive the contest with their reputations intact.

    Compelling evidence

Comey is the kind of adversary that no White House would relish.

If the claims in his memo are correct, they would appear to offer the most compelling evidence yet that Trump’s attempt to shut down the probe could amount to an obstruction of justice that imperils his presidency.

“It looks like he was trying to impede the investigation,” said CNN senior political analyst David Gergen. “He was using his power to do that, and when James Comey didn’t go along with him, when he wasn’t his boy, he fired him.”

Gergen suggested the situation was so serious following Tuesday’s revelations that America could be on the cusp of a new impeachment drama.

The White House has dismissed Comey’s version of events revealed by a memo that was described to CNN.

“While the President has repeatedly expressed his view that General Flynn is a decent man who served and protected our country, the President has never asked Mr. Comey or anyone else to end any investigation, including any investigation involving General Flynn,” a White House official said in a statement.

The prospect of a new arm’s length confrontation with Comey might also be causing Trump to second guess himself after suddenly firing the former director last week, then admitting on television that he did so because he was frustrated about a Russia probe he has called a waste of taxpayer money.

    White House’s evolving saga

Given the stakes, it now appears certain that Comey will be called out of his premature retirement to testify before Congress about the memo. He would be grilled on what Trump actually said in their Oval Office meeting on February 14 that is now at the center of the political hurricane. Comey would also face scrutiny over why he decided to keep a log of his conversations with the President that was then leaked at a moment of maximum embarrassment for the White House.

Chaffetz: I'm ready to subpoena for Comey memo

Chaffetz: I’m ready to subpoena for Comey memo 01:41

‘I have my subpoena pen ready’

The Republican Congress hasn’t exactly been holding Trump’s feet to the fire in the first few months of his administration.

    But that may be changing.

Already, Rep. Jason Chaffetz, Republican chairman of the House Oversight Committee, has asked the FBI to provide“all memoranda, notes, summaries, and recordings referring to or relating to any communications between Comey and the president.”

“I have my subpoena pen ready,” Chaffetz tweeted on Tuesday.

Other lawmakers, grasping the deeply serious twist the Trump crisis took on Tuesday, are also calling for full disclosure.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina, said that Comey should be called before the Senate Judiciary Committee, on which Graham sits.

“OK, well, he’s got to come in and tell us why,” Graham said. “We’re not going to try somebody on a piece of paper.”

So far in the Trump presidency, the most important Republican leaders, House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell, have tried to keep the focus of their troops on implementing a conservative agenda rather than holding an unpredictable President to account.

But Ohio Republican Gov. John Kasich said in a CNN town hall event Tuesday that needs to change.

“I saw that Speaker (Paul) Ryan said some things tonight about getting to the bottom line,” Kasich said. “Frankly, I think he should be more aggressive. I think he should speak out more and hopefully he will.”

A spokesperson for Ryan released a statement earlier Tuesday night, saying: “We need to have all the facts, and it is appropriate for the House Oversight Committee to request this memo.”

Comey: We follow where the evidence takes us

Comey: We follow where the evidence takes us 02:04

    Comey hearing?

A Comey hearing would instantly become one of the most significant congressional appearances of modern times.

The practiced, analytical note-taking of a former FBI director who knows how to leave a paper trail would amount to a compelling piece of evidence in the court of public opinion and pit Comey’s word against Trump’s.

After all, a Comey memo could approach “smoking gun” significance if it appears to prove that the President could conceivably be accused of obstructing justice — potentially grounds for impeachment.

A Comey appearance before a high wattage, televised hearing would mark another extraordinary dimension in a career in which the former FBI chief has found himself at the center of gripping episodes of Beltway drama.

Ten years ago, Comey, then acting attorney general, rushed to a Washington hospital to thwart an attempt by White House counsel Alberto Gonzales and White House chief of staff Andy Card to get a seriously ill Attorney General John Ashcroft to reauthorize a surveillance program.

That intervention made him a hero for Democrats. But they came to despise Comey for his leading man role in a later drama, the probe into Hillary Clinton’s email server.

Clinton’s campaign blames Comey for her defeat last November. He intervented late in the campaign over a new batch of emails found on the laptop of Anthony Weiner, the husband of the Democratic nominee’s aide Huma Abedin.

Trump lauded Comey for his conduct. But he soon came to loggerheads with Comey in his own administration, when the FBI director reportedly refused to offer him a vow of loyalty. Tuesday’s reports that the President tried to get him to shelve the Flynn probe only thicken the plot.

Comey’s political misadventures may offer Republicans a chance to question his motives should he testify, and the GOP is in a mood to defend its president, whose antics in recent days have sorely tested the patience of his supporters.

    Falsehoods, exaggerations and blatant untruths

But it is also possible that given his administration’s history of repeated falsehoods, exaggerations and blatant untruths, on issues from the size of the inauguration crowds to claims that President Barack Obama wiretapped Trump Tower, the President may not come across as a particularly credible witness in the court of public opinion.

And there’s no guarantee that the White House can get its story straight. In recent days, Trump has repeatedly contradicted his own press team as they work to defuse multiple firestorms in Washington.

Since Comey would testify from Congress, and Trump can command the bully pulpit, both men, in effect would be vying for victory in the court of public opinion.

Comey, in the very act of taking notes about his conversations with Trump, seems to have indicated that at the very least he considered the President a problematic character who could embroil him in future controversies.

Trump has already made clear his deep antipathy to Comey. After firing him, Trump told NBC News that the FBI director was a “showboat” and a “grandstander” whom he had been planning to jettison for months.

Those unflattering impressions are not likely to be improved if Trump, ever the showman himself, tunes in on cable television to watch Comey starring in a hearing that keeps the rest of the country on tenterhooks.

But the result of their public duel may go a long way to dictating the fate of Trump presidency. If Trump allies fail to paint Comey as a discredited figure, he could impose deep political damage on the President.

It was already immediately noticeable in the wake of Tuesday’s disclosures that Republicans on Capitol Hill were more reticent about coming out in strong support of the President than they had been on previous occasions.

A damning performance by Comey could further add to their doubts and leave Trump in deep political peril if his alleged missteps persuade even a Republican Congress to contemplate impeachment proceedings
